A FORMER Wellington Cricket Club chairman and president, Glyn Meredith, has passed away, aged 91.
Mr Meredith, who was born and lived in Wellington all his life, died in Linden House on April 12.
He was married to Janet for 68 years, having first met when he returned home on a weekend leave while undertaking his National Service in the RAF.
His entire working career was with Somerset County Council, in Taunton, having joined it straight after leaving Wellington School.
Mr Meredith played rugby and cricket for Wellington and later became a qualified cricket umpire, and was one of the first neutral umpires in the Somerset Cricket League.
Wellington Cricket Club played an important part in his life and he became chairman and subsequently president, and was honoured to be awarded life membership.
He had a close connection with Wellington School and served on many committees there, including as vice-chairman of governors and chairman of the Friends of Wellington School.
Mr Meredith became a magistrate for the Wellington and Taunton area and progressed to be court chairman.
On retirement from the council he spent more time on magistrate activities.
He loved gardening in his back garden and had an allotment in the Basins, and even in his last few months of life he enjoyed spending an hour working on his garden.
A keen skittles player, he played for OBA in the town’s Friday night league for many years.
He enjoyed watching films on television and would spend hours discussing them with his grandsons, and never tired of watching Poirot productions, starring fellow Wellington School old boy David Suchet.
He leaves his wife Janet, son and daughter-in-law Stephen and Sue, grandsons Christopher and Peter, and great-granddaughter Mindy.
A funeral service will be held in Taunton Deane Crematorium at 2.40pm on Thursday, May 1.
