THE sports centre in Wellington was reopening at midday on Wednesday (September 3) following the death of a member of staff.
The Devon Air Ambulance flew from Exeter and landed near the centre on Tuesday afternoon after a man became ill at about 4 pm.
Staff closed the centre for the rest of the day while the medical emergency was ongoing and it remained shut on Wednesday morning.
A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Constabulary said: “Police were alerted by the ambulance service to the sudden death of a man following a medical episode at Wellington Sports Centre just before 5 pm on Tuesday.
“Officers attended and, while cause of death is yet to be determined, it is not being treated as suspicious.”
Everyone Active contract manager Mark Washington said: “A colleague suffered a medical emergency while at work at the centre.
“Our team responded immediately, administering First Aid until the emergency services arrived.
“Despite their efforts, we are deeply saddened to confirm that our colleague passed away.
“I would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to their family at this very difficult time, and we are also providing support to colleagues at the centre.”
It was the second sudden death in Wellington in two days after police broke into a town centre flat on Monday and found a man believed to be in his 60s dead inside.
