AFTER months of power cuts, Wellington will finally receive a £500,000 power upgrade with works beginning next week.
On February 16, the ninth power cut in eight months hit several hundred homes and businesses in the Rockwell Green area.
The blackout also caused the Rockwell Green crossroads traffic lights to go out and left many homes without power for several hours on end.
A pensioner in her 80’s told the Wellington Weekly that the frequent power cuts left her feeling ‘upset’ and ‘exhausted’
The woman said: “I feel exhausted. When you are looking after a sick person in the house and then experience a power cut, it makes every task more difficult.
“I thought ‘here is another problem I have to solve’ and I just felt defeated to be honest.”
National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) announced this morning (Friday, March 13) that new underground cables are being laid in Owen Street, between Station Road and Seymour Street, from March 16.
An NGED spokesperson said: “We will be replacing existing cable to improve the resilience of this part of our low voltage network and to boost its capacity to meet higher demand from customers in future.
“We appreciate the work will cause some disruption for residents but hope they will bear with us as we carry out this important project.”
The company recently invited affected customers to a meeting at Wellington Rugby Club to explain the impact of the work.
