Following continued disappointment, Wellington Town Council is looking to thrash out its frustrations with those contracted to provide street cleaning services in the area.

It was back in September when members of the town council’s environment committee were told that the current programme for street cleaning throughout Wellington included mechanical street sweeping, bin emptying and a barrow service delivered by ID Verde through a contract with Somerset Council.

The contract was automatically renewed in January 2024 for a three-year period, but councillors have been far from impressed at the work carried out.

The town council’s open spaces manager Darren Hill told the environment committee on November 19 that he had received an email from Somerset Council about the ongoing road sweeping situation in Wellington.

Councillors had suggested that they did not feel as if the mechanical road sweeper was not being used enough in Wellington and not in accordance with the contract the town council had with Somerset Council.

But Mr Hill said: “They [Somerset Council] have told us that the mechanical road sweeper is used in Wellington on a fortnightly basis rather than weekly.

“We have chased them up and they are going to meet with us in the next couple of weeks to discuss things.”

Mr Hill also said that his open spaces team had recently cleared all the fallen autumnal leaves which had covered the road markings in the North Street car park in Wellington.

Members of the council’s environment committee were also told on November 19 that CCTV cameras would be getting installed at Wellington Park during the first week in December.

It is hoped the cameras will help deter vandalism in the park which has been an ongoing problem for many years.

Councillors hope CCTV will catch the troublemakers on camera and see them brought to justice.
