SOME of the pavements in Wellington were in a shocking condition and would lead to a serious accident for pedestrians, said Cllr Gloria Copley at the May meeting when she called for action to be taken by the county council to improve them.

Part of the problem was caused by heavy lorries going over the various footways. There were problems all over the town. Over 150 paving slabs were broken in Owen Street.

Cllr Marcus Barr said that he had seen quite a few people take a tumble on the uneven pavement outside of the One Stop shop in High Street, Wellington.

Cllr William Brown suggested that residents should take photos of the defective and dangerous pavements and send them to the county council asking for action to be taken.

Cllr John Thorne pointed out that the county council, who are responsible for pavements, had recently renewed the pavements on both sides of Fore Street recently.

On his suggestion it was agreed to find out if the county had any other plans for pavement improvements in the town although it was felt this might be unlikely in view of the recent cuts in county and government expenditure.
