MEMBERS of the public were arriving at the Repair Café held in Wellington Baptist Church hall in South Street, Wellington, on Saturday, even before the event was officially open.

Many brought much-loved possessions they had no wish to throw away. Others brought tools for sharpening or clothes to be mended. The volunteer repairers, especially the electricians, were kept busy throughout the morning, while the owners of the items needing repair enjoyed the chance for refreshments and a chat while they waited.

Among the visitors were Rebecca Pow MP, Cllr Catherine Herbert, mayor of Taunton Deane, and Wellington’s own mayor, Cllr Gary James. They were all very impressed, expressing their support for the event, Cllr Herbert saying: “This is brilliant! We need more of this.”

Some townsfolk came simply out of interest, one gentleman saying as he left: “If I need to have something fixed, I’ll know where to come in future.”

Holly Regan-Jones, a member of Transition Town Wellington and co-ordinator of the Repair Café, said afterwards: “I think we can call it a great success. To have approaching a hundred people coming to our first event is really gratifying, and with so many people saying such positive things about it. It wouldn’t have happened without a very willing and able team of volunteers, and I want to thank them all most sincerely, as well as the ladies from Wellington WI who provided the refreshments.”

Over sixty items needing attention were submitted, the majority of repairs and refurbishments being successful.

However, time ran out for some people, and it became clear that more repairers will be needed for the next Repair Café on Saturday, April 20. Anyone who thinks they might be able to offer their skills is invited to contact Holly on 01823 660161, or email [email protected]
