THE Afternoon Indoor League at Wellington Bowling Club has started - and already there is a great deal of competition between the teams.

There are eight teams in all. They are the Badgers, Blackbirds, Demons, Eagles, Hopefuls, Ninchers, Trailblazers and Yzeds.

Each team plays four bowlers each week. They have two bowls each and play in turn until all bowls have been bowled to the jack.

Then they turn around and do the same again. They keep that up for two hours and when the bell rings for the end of the game, the scores decide which team is the winner.

Last week an excellent team performance from the Trailblazers, with Angie Moore leading the way, saw last year’s league champions bring down the Blackbirds who did all they could but could not stop Trailblazers taking a 19 - 6 victory to stay at the top of the table.

Nick Channon’s Eagles, this time with Steve Lovell at the helm, were far too strong for a Ninchers’ side who did their best but couldn't keep up. The Eagles are soaring high in second place.

Recovering from the previous week’s shock defeat to Eagles, Steve Horrill’s Hopefuls team ran out easy winners against the Yzeds. At 6-5 after 7 ends the contest was close, but the Yzeds failed to score another point. ‘Not good enough’, said skipper Brenda Wilson, who promptly ordered early morning training for the next five days!

Sadly, Demons failed to arrive for their match against Badgers, who claimed the points with a 10-0 whitewash. Team captain, Ernie Windsor was puzzled by the team’s no show and was quick to inform the league manager that it will not happen again. But with a match against the formidable Trailblazers coming up, it will not be an easy return.
