THE ladies of Wellington Bowling Club are through to the next round of the Fear Plate, a county competition, after beating visitors Bridgwater .
The rink of Wendy Scott, Di Dagg, Shirley Samuel and Skip Christine Willcocks started strongly, pulling away after the 7th end to lead 20-5 after end 13. Bridgwater then started to pull back but Wellington held on to win by 21-13.
On another rink Janet Lovell, June Anderson, Angie Moore and skip Lynda Manning started slowly but took 6 on the 5th end. They never looked back and won 21-10.
The final rink of Liz May, Monica Carter, Marguerite Nichols and skip Gill Groves were down at the start but took 5 on the 6th end to lead 9-6. Their lead didn’t last long as Bridgwater came back strongly and had a healthy lead of 22-9 after 13 ends.
Wellington dug deep and pulled up to 17-23 which meant that Wellington’s overall score was 59 to Bridgwater’s 46.
Meanwhile, Wellington Bowling Club Lions and Pumas were at home last week while Tigers drove to east Devon to play Feniton Eagles. All three Wellington teams played well and all three celebrated victory.
Mike Copping, Nick Channon and Mike Groves' Lions led from the start in their home match against Madeira A, taking a comfortable win 21 – 11. Julian Street, Paul Kelly and Graham Brown's Lions were not so successful, losing by just five shots 14 - 19. Final score: Wellington Lions 35, Madeira 30.
Phil Hutchings, Phil Wiggan and Peter White's Pumas were 9 – 1 down against Chardstock Condors after 7 ends and looked to be sad losers. Then they started to catch up and Chardstock got stuck on 11 shots for the next seven ends and with one to play, Pumas were leading by 4 shots. Everyone held their breath because when the skips came to the mat in the last end, Condors were holding 5 shots.
Peter White saved the day for the Wellington trio with a really good bowl which cut their opponents' lead from 5 to 2 and so Wellington' s Pumas were the winners, 17 – 15.
Those watching the match on the next rink could not believe what they were seeing. The scores changed dramatically from one end to the next and no-one could guess what the outcome would be.
Simon Spalding, Alan Every and skip Alan Moore were losing by 8 shots, 10 – 2 after 7 but with one to play in the match Pumas were just 3 shots behind on 22 – 19. Then the Wellington trio collected a 4 in the last to win it by a single shot, 23 – 22.
The overall score at the end was a victory to Wellington's Pumas by 40 shots to 37.
Both the Lions and Pumas won at home but their games were really hard fought, whereas the Tigers were burning bright in their away match against Feniton Eagles.
Mike Connor, Eddie Dilley and skip Tony Gibson's team were level with their opponents early on but they steadily and consistently built a good lead and moved on to win it, 20 shots to 10.
Derek Vile, Ian Hollingsworth and skip David Beaudet were in top gear and the poor Feniton trio lost by a big margin, 24 shots to 6.
Wellington Pumas managed a well deserved overall victory by three shots, 40 – 37.
