WELLINGTON Bowling Club’s A team followed up the ladies' excellent victory against a powerful squad from Taunton's Vivary Park by gaining an equally splendid victory.
And they bowled very well. Some of Wellington's best bowlers played three teams from Somerton Bowling Club at their Coram’s Lane home venue and won all of them in style.
Darren Sparks, Bill Warnett and skip Tony Gibson struggled to begin with. They were trailing 6 – 5 after six ends but they got down to some serious bowling and by halfway they led comfortably 18 – 6, having played some great bowls.
There was even more discomfort to come for the Somerton team because the Wellington side more than doubled their score to win convincingly 38 – 16.
Mike Copping, Roger Murphy, Nick Channon and skip Mike Groves were in trouble at the start. After just three ends, Somerton led 5 – 1. The game moved on and by the seventh end Wellington had taken a one shot lead 7 – 6.
The remaining ends were closely fought but by the finish the home side won by a comfortable 27 to 17.
Pete Nichols, Paul Kelly, Jay Merrell and skip Phil Ellis were determined to make it three wins out of three and they set off at great pace leading 9 – 0 after just five ends. However, the Somerton team were not going to give up easily and they picked up the pace as best they could. With six ends to play they were only four shots behind at 10 – 6 but they were always chasing the game and Wellington moved ahead to win it 22 – 11 to complete a treble success.
The final score was a resounding victory to Wellington by 87 – 44 - coupled with a win on all three rinks.
