AFTER a hectic summer of matches and inter club competitions, the new indoor season has begun at Wellington Bowling Club with six teams battling it out in the Weekend Mixed Triples League.
The first of these matches was between the Ninchers, a fairly new team who came up against the Woodpeckers who have been playing together for some time.
Jeanette Mogg, Chris Mogg and skip Martyn Beed's Ninchers were in the lead after two ends by 2 shots to 1, but Steve Lovell, Janet Lovell and skip Nick Channon's Woodpeckers were not going to put up with that for long and they soon moved ahead to 10 shots to 4 at the halfway point and they increased their lead in the second half to win comfortably 17 – 8.
In the second game, Diana Dagg, David Dagg and Tony Woollard's New Rollers came up against Suzanne Worth, Robin Shaw and skip Alan Mark's Allstars. Despite having not had a great deal of time together the Allstars played well. It was nip and tuck all the way through but in the very last end New Rollers' skip Tony Woollard played a beauty right onto the jack to pick up a win by 8 shots to 5.
The final game was between Liz May, Tony Weston and skip Alan May's Skylarks, and David Harrison, Marguerite Nichols and Butch Horrill's Southsiders.
It was very close all the way through and with one end to play Skylarks led by one shot 13 – 12. Sadly for Skylarks, Southsider's skip, Butch Horrill played an excellent shot with his last bowl to pick up the one vital shot to capture a 13 – 13 draw.
So, after one game, Woodpeckers and New Rollers are top of the table but the season has only just begun.
