THE Baker Cup, the area’s own T20 cricket competition, was set for its 83rd successive season of competition this summer but the coronavirus situation has curbed its schedule along with so much else at the moment.
Cup competition secretary David Derrick said earlier this week: “We were due to get under way on Monday (May 11) with two preliminary round games that would then dovetail into a first round of eight games on the evening of Monday, May 18, with all the Shield and Trophy offerings following on from there as well as the main cup’s latter stages.
“The competition’s management committee has debated the impasse at length and with there being no cricket at any level on offer until at least July 1 – when the Baker Cup final should have been played – this season’s competition cannot be delivered in the form we intended.
“That said we have not given up all hope of not being able to offer something called the Baker Cup in 2020, but it all depends on getting the green light to be able to have some sort of season, and how another form of competition can be set up and how it would be placed within what would be a severely shortened season whatever. We continue to monitor events and will decide how to progress in due course.’’
