THE weather tried its best to spoil another England Women’s One Day International at Taunton. However, despite a five hour break for rain the match against West Indies ended in another victory to complete a clean sweep in the three match series.
With ticket sales in excess of 5000 despite a pessimistic weather forecast, supporters were queuing at both the Sir Viv Richards and Jack White Gates to enter the ground where they were greeted by the Rainbow Steelband.
After being asked to bat first West Indies were reduced to four for three before a fourth wicket partnership between Shemaine Campbell and Oiana Joseph took the total onto 43 when the former was out for 18. However, just before mid day without further addition to the total, the rain started to fall and the players left the field.
Many thought that would be the end of the game but the umpires carried out several inspections and at 5pm, thanks to a mopping up operation that was carried out by the grounds team, the game resumed.
West Indies took their total onto 106 for 8 from their reduced overs of 21, thanks to 34 from Joseph and a bright and breezy 27 off 18 balls with six 4s from Aliyah Alleyne. Sarah Glenn with three for 21 off four overs was the pick of the bowlers.
Chasing 106 to win (DLS) England openers took the total onto 40 before Sophia Dunkley was out for 26 in the fifth over. New batter Alice Capsey joined skipper Nat Skiver-Brunt who hit a boundary in the seventh over to bring up the 50, much to the delight of the large number of supporters who had remained at the ground. Skiver-Brunt upped the tempo and hit an unbeaten 57 off 33 balls to see England to 109 without further loss in 10.5 overs.
