SOMERSET Women have made a flying start to the 2026 Vitality Blast and after six games four of which they have won, they are in joint second place in the table with Surrey one point behind leaders The Blaze.
Skipper Sophie Luff has played a major part in this year’s success and to date she has scored 251 runs at an average of 50.20 making her the leading run scorer in the 2026 Vitality Blast.
This is Sophie’s 17th season playing for the county, and she reckons that she is now playing some of her best ever cricket.
“It’s been so good to start off our T20 so well and win a few games which breeds a little bit of confidence ,and personally I’m playing some of the best cricket I have ever played so yes it all pretty exciting.”
How much has it helped having Erin Osborne on board as the head coach to work with?
“Erin Osborne has been huge for me and it was the kind of change that we needed as a team, and I think on reflection it was a change that I needed personally. I have got a great relationship with Erin and although I have only really known her six months it feels like I have known her a lot longer than that.
“She has given me me the opportunity to bat at the top of the order where I’m playing a different role and having to set the tone in a different way. It allows me to go out and bat the way that I want to bat, put bowlers under pressure and take the game on.
“Erin has real confidence in what I can deliver and she is really clear on where she wants to take the team and I think we are seeing signs of real improvement and progress in that area, so plenty of exciting things to come I’m sure.
“Who knows what we are capable of - we are probably surprising ourselves if we’re honest, we didn’t really know what to expect going into the T20 but the way that we have performed so far has been brilliant and the group is in a really good place, we are feeling really confident and rightly so, especially after our victory over Surrey.
“It’s now about rinsing and repeating what we have been doing really well thats the biggest learning for us, we are doing a lot of really good things and it’s about how can we do them more and more often, especially in T20 when you’ve got momentum you want to make the most of it.”
Somerset Women now revert to the Metro Bank One Day Cup 50 over competition for two games the first of which is against Hampshire at the Cooper Associates County Ground on Saturday 13th June before heading for Exmouth on Wednesday 17th to entertain Warwickshire.
The Women are next in T20 action at Taunton when they play Durham on Friday 26th June in a double header, which is followed by the Mens return match against Gloucestershire.
The skipper added: “It’s another double header and we are all really excited about because it’s an opportunity to play in front of a home crowd at Taunton. It’s awesome and I know the girls love playing here and we always feel really well supported.”
