ONE of the many sporting competitions caught up in the coronavirus crisis is the local T20 club competition, the Baker Cup, which was set to start in just over two weeks’ time.
The preliminary round matches were set to start on Monday, May 11, with the first round of the cup on Monday, May 18, so changes will almost certainly be needed to produce a workable format for the 18 teams taking part in 2020.
It is the 83rd successive season the cup has been contested. Competition secretary David Derrick said: “We know that we are going to feel the full force of the current situation as we are very much an early season competition that utilises the time of the year when the days are longest and daylight is at its most plentiful to play on evenings in the working week.
“The lockdown situation and that no cricket is set to be played before the end of May sees that we need to reappraise matters and the competition committee will be doing just that in a strategic and effective way that will have the intention of delivering what we can give these unprecedented circumstances.
“I know that all competing teams and our partner clubs understand the situation and we will be working with them as is appropriate.”
