WELLINGTON gained their fifth successive win in the Somerset Division of the West of England Premier Cricket League when they beat Yeovil away by one wicket in a thrilling game.

Chasing a target of 208 to win, Wellington began well enough with an opening partnership of 44 between George Ruell (16) and Luke Desave (34). But they began to lose wickets at regular intervals as Mark Cawley (3-29) broke through the top order.

But the odds still favoured Wellington as they topped 100 for the loss of only three wickets. Lakshan Edirisinghe (24) and Jacob Hurry (20) kept Wellington on target but no-one managed to dominate the Yeovil bowling.

In the end it was the last pair of Andy Hurry (10 not out) and Toby Stirzaker (18 not out) who came to the rescue and won the game for the visitors.

Earlier Yeovil, batting first, were in deep trouble themselves at 98-6 - they lost three wickets on 88 runs - before Dan Ewens (49) and Jack Veale (27) shared in a 49-run seventh wicket stand, taking the score to 147.

Zhawi Brighton (17), Cowley (12) and Tom Redwood (11 not out) added some useful late-order runs, taking the score to 207 all out. William Chesterman also scored 26 coming in first wicket down.

Wellington captain Arron Campbell finished with the fine figures of 3-27 in his ten overs, while Nathan Yarde took 2-54, Stirzaker 2-30 and Andy Hurry (2-37).

One of the outstanding performances of the day in the division was Bridgwater 2nd XI’s 296-run victory over Shapwick and Polden. Bridgwater openers Andrew Hallaran (129) and Harminder Singh (155) scored run-a-ball tons, putting on 295 before being parted.

Meanwhile, Taunton Deane remain top of the table after they won by 116 runs away to former leaders Temple Cloud who have been having a lean spell.
