WELLINGTON 2nd XI gained a 127-run home victory over Huntspill & District in Division Two of the Somerset Cricket League.

Put into bat, Wellington scored 216-7 in their 20 overs after overcoming the early loss of opener Paul Short (9).

Fellow opener Neil Henry top scored with 43, which included six fours, while wicket-keeper Aks Latifi made 40 and James Brackenbury 32.

Tom Gardner was Huntspill’s most successful bowler with 2-31 in eight overs, while there were wickets for James Garner, Matthew Counsell, Nicholas Jones, Kuba Roper and David Counsell.

Huntspill never recovered from losing a wicket without a run on the scoreboard and were bowled out for 89 in 27.4 overs. Wil Parkman led the bowling attack with 4-14, while Tom Hopkins took 2-26 and Henry 2-0. There were also wickets for Alex Derbidge and Ollie Hunt.

Wellington moved up to fourth in the table after taking 35 points from the match, having now won two of their opening three games.

Wellington 3rd XI found themselves without a match after their opponents, Huntspil’s 2nd XI, conceded their fixture in Division Seven Red. Wellington received 35 points.

Meanwhile, Wellington lst XI won through to the second round of Somerset Major Cup after beating Wembdon by eight wickets in mid-week.

Wembdon scored 146-6 in their 20 overs with Jon Brockwell top scoring with 52 runs, with three fours and four sixes. Openers Harry Everett hit 33 and Will Anning 25. Arron Campbell was Wellington’s leading wicket-taker with 2-22. while there were wickets for Tony Stirzaker, Nathan Yarde and Laken Edirisinghe.

Opener Tom Hazell-Evans steered Wellington to victory with a fine knock of 57 not out, which included seven fours and two sixes. Edirisinghe scored 43 and Jacob Hurry 26 not out.

Brendan Pope and Sam Buddy both took 1-33 in three overs for Wembdon.
