AFTER an enforced break due to postponements, Wellington Wildcats were back in home action against top of the table North Curry in the Under 12 South section of the Somerset Girls League.

Wildcats started lively creating some good possession down the right-hand side through Emilia S. Curry came back into the game, managing to get themselves ahead with a breakaway goal that goalkeeper Remi S couldn’t keep out. Although behind Wildcats never gave in and finished the first half as the better team with most of the possession in the opposition half.

The second half ebbed and flowed just like the first, with both sides sharing possession. Wildcats had a gilt-edged chance to equalise when Millie G played a great pass out wide to Sara M who put a wonderful cross into the 6-yard box, where Emilia S couldn’t quite get the right connection.

Still working hard and against the run of play the Wildcats were hit with a sucker punch second goal that sealed the result. A great effort, some good football played and an enjoyable game to watch. Player of the match went to Sammie G for her solid defending whilst making her Wildcats debut.

Under 14s vs Middlezoy: Wildcats made the trip to Middlezoy for an action-packed game in Division Two. It kicked off with Wildcats keeping most of the play in the opposition half, with some half chances were met by the Middlzoy ‘keeper. Any breakthrough Middlezoy did make was met by the strong Wildcats defensive unit. Half time: 0-0.

Middlezoy came out strong after the break with ‘keeper Faith D making some vital saves to keep Wildcats in the game. Wildcats continued their press down both flanks, with London A coming close. With the last play of the game, defender, Georgie L stuck herself into a tough contest defending a close range shot to keep the game level. Full time: 0-0. Player of the day Georgie L.

Under 15s vs Wincanton: Wildcats faced second place Wincanton in tough cold and wet conditions in Division One. Wincanton created an early chance that saw ‘keeper, Sophie W bravely winning a 50/50. Wildcats to their credit, adapted to the harsh conditions and played terrific football using both flanks effectively with Flo G and Lola S in full flow.

The attacking players linked up superbly, with Lola S reacting fastest to a rebound, opening the scoring. The half was played at high intensity with skill from both sides. Wildcats were caught out once by Wincanton who equalised to make it 1-1 at halftime.

Wincanton started brightly in the second half to pull ahead with a well worked goal on 45 minutes. Wildcats reacted well, proceeding to gain possession with the back line being solid. The last 20 minutes were mostly played in the opposition half, Isla C and Lily F dominated midfield, allowing the forward players to create chances.

With five minutes left Lily F claimed a loose ball and smashed it into the top corner to wild celebrations. Wildcats pushed for a winner but, unfortunately, had to walk away with just a point. Full time 2-2. Player of the match was jointly awarded to Flo G and Lola S. Both wingers added a different dimension and threat to attacking play throughout working tirelessly.
