EXPERIENCED defender Tim Legg has become the new manager of Wellington AFC following the departure of former gaffer Clive Jones.

It was announced first thing on Monday morning that Wellington had ‘parted company’ with Jones – despite the fact that what would turn out to be his last game in charge on Saturday had resulted in a convincing 5-0 victory over visiting Odd Down.

The win lifted Wellington off the foot of the Premier Division table in the Toolstation Western League and out of the relegation zone, but it still represented only the side’s third success in 11 league matches this campaign.

It was only in April when the club announced that Jones would be continuing as first-team manager for a fifth season having led The Tangerines to promotion back to the Premier Division in 2016-17.

But it would seem that the five-star performance on Saturday was not enough to convince the club officials that happier times were around the corner with Jones still in charge.

“Results since the start of the season have obviously been disappointing and we feel a change is needed to address the situation,” said a club statement.

“We would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Clive for all his efforts as manager, particularly in leading our return to the Premier Division of the Toolstation League.

“Tim Legg first pulled on a Wellington shirt for our Under-11s 20 years ago and knows the club inside-out.

“As well as his extensive playing experience, he has also coached at various levels for a number of years and we are confident he has all the attributes to take our club forward on the pitch.”

Wellington have a trio of home league games coming up against Cadbury Heath (October 19), Street (October 26) and Hallen (November 9), and positive results in those will certainly do wonders to improve the current situation on the pitch and propel the team up the Premier Division table.

But Jones’ departure has certainly left some people hugely disappointed – especially coming after Saturday’s 5-0 success over Odd Down.

Andrew Govier, a member of Wellington AFC’s management committee, told the WWN it was a ‘disgraceful’ decision.

“The way that his loyal service to the club was brought to an end on Saturday, following an excellent 5–0 victory, was disgraceful,” he said in a letter to the WWN.

“As a committee member, I would have expected to have been consulted about such a major decision but I found out through whispers and gossip on Saturday evening. This is completely unprofessional and unacceptable. I would like to disassociate myself from the decision and the way it was made.”
