WELLINGTON Wildcats U13s battled bravely in the Somerset County Cup quarter-final at Portishead.
After a three-month layoff due to the weather, Wildcats returned to action with a challenging away tie against one of Bristol’s strongest sides.
Despite a positive start, Wildcats found themselves 3-0 down at half-time, with all three goals coming from a series of uncharacteristic errors. However, heads never dropped and the Wildcats emerged for the second half with renewed energy and determination.
Wildcats produced a much-improved performance after the break, matching Portishead across the pitch and competing strongly in every area. Portishead extended their lead with a fourth goal, but the Wildcats responded well and began to take control of the game. Their efforts were rewarded when a dangerous cross from Mary H, caused problems in the Portishead defence and was diverted into the net off a home player.
Wildcats continued to press, creating further chances, with Amelia S and Iyla J, both going close, but the finishing touch proved just out of reach. The match finished 4–1 to Portishead, but the scoreline did not reflect the character and performance shown by the Wildcats.
Player of the Match went to Amelia W, for an outstanding defensive display at the back, showing composure, strength and leadership throughout. Wildcats can be extremely proud of their performance and will now turn their focus to an exciting League and League Cup campaign ahead.
Meanwhile, Wildcats U12s are home to Wembdon Juniors in South Division on Saturday, February 14. Wildcats are lying fifth in the table but have games in hand on all the teams around them. Wembdon are in third spot with seven wins in 13 matches.
Wildcats are away to Ilminster Girls in Division Two of the Under 14 section. Wildcats are lying sixth while Ilminster are on the bottom but have played only three games.
