WELLINGTON Rugby Club officials were left fuming after their first team game against Ivybridge at the Athletic Ground on Saturday, February 7, was called off because their opponents refused to play.

The Wellington club’s secretary Ashley Colman said: “We were ready to play the match and the pitch was declared playable by the match referee.

“But Ivybridge arrived at the ground and then told us they would not play. Obviously we weren’t very happy with the situation to say the least. The pitch was playable and we were keen to get the game on.

“It was a big disappointment, not only for us but spectators who thought the game would be played.”

This would have been the first meeting in the league between the teams this season. They are due to play each other at Ivybridge next month.

Wellington 2nd XV were due to play Bridgwater & Albion on the Beech Grove pitch but it was declared unplayable in the morning.
