WELLINGTON will be without a Boxing Day game this year – much to the disappointment of manager Clive Jones, writes Barry Knott.
“I love football on Boxing Days," said Jones who has given his players the week off. Many of the players are involved in Christmas works parties so it would be pointless having a training session. We will get Christmas over with and return to training next week.”
There is a full programme of matches in Division One of the Toolstation League on Boxing Day but the division has an odd number of teams and this year it is Wellington’s turn to take a break over the festive weekend.
There will be no fixtures on Boxing Day in the Devon and Exeter League which means Wellington’s other two senior sides, The Reserves and Thirds, are also without games along with Hemyock. Football will be back in full swing on Saturday, January 2, along with the local Saturday and youth leagues.
n Wellington were in a ruthless mood over the weekend, gaining a 7-0 home win over Devizes Town in the first division of the Toolstation League. Jack Bryant and Ian Bellinger both netted twice, with the other goals coming from Conor Bryant, on his 21st birthday, Luke Redrup and Jack Porter.
It was Wellington’s best display since Clive Jones took over during the summer. It enabled them to move up to 12th in the table and they are only four points behind fifth-placed Hengrove Athletic.
