WELLINGTON is expected to have another team playing in the Invest Southwest Taunton Saturday Football League next season.
Wellington Cricket Club have applied to join the league calling themselves Wellington Reds and are expected to be put in Division Three.
Des Campbell will be the team’s chairman with Connor Sellick player-manager. The idea came from players who play five-a-side football in the winter to keep fit.
It also means the cricket club’s headquarters at the Playing Field will be used much more regularly during the winter, providing more income for the local club.
Their application will be dealt with when the league holds its annual meeting. Others showing interest in joining include Dunster, Ruishton and Castlemoat’s third team.
Applications to join the league, which consisted of 37 teams in three divisions last season, must be in by Sunday, May 31. No teams have decided to withdraw.
Meanwhile, it looks almost certain Wellington A will be playing in the first division next winter – whenever it might start.
Wellington were top of the second division when the league was brought to a halt by Covid-19 in the middle of March.
They were one point clear of main rivals Bridgwater Sports, who had a match in hand and are expected to join them in the top division.
Wellington’s final match of last season was at the end of February when they beat Middlezoy Rovers Athletic 2-1 at home.
Their record was played 17, won 13, drawn one and lost three. Their goal difference was better than Bridgwater Sports.
n Wellington side Moortown have again registered to play in the Keyline Somerset Sunday League with Joey Conway and dad Joe continuing to run the side. Although they struggled in the league, Moortown reached the final of the Jim Jowett Cup. Their opponents were Shepherds Rest but the final was never played because of Covid-19.
