WELLINGTON Town welcomed unbeaten Victoria Park Rangers Eagles to the Playing Field this past Sunday in Division One of the Under 15 section of the HO Soccer Taunton & District Youth Football League, hoping to continue their winning form from the previous week in the Somerset County Cup.
However, VPR's attacking prowess was evident from the start - the Eagles grabbing the lead inside the first five minutes from an early corner. A shadow of the team that finished bottom of Division Two the previous season, the Bridgwater visitors looked assured as they sought to build on their opener - while Town looked to summon their early season form in their quest to find an equaliser.
But three goals inside of six first-half minutes saw the Eagles take full control of the fixture as Welly endured a difficult first half hour.
But Town - always up for the fight - hit back just before half-time to give them a glimmer of hope; Jack B firing home to make it 4-1 at the break.
Welly started the second half with positive intent and looked eager to build on their strong finish to the first half, but a well organised Bridgwater team dug in and extended their lead with goals on 56 and 70 minutes to put the game out of reach for the hosts.
Town - who continued to show positive intent throughout the second half - hit back with two well-deserved goals through their hard-working striker Fletcher L late in the half, before VPR grabbed the game's final goal in the dying minutes as they ran out worthy 7-3 winners.
Wellington Town’s next game is away on Sunday, October 19, against Bridgwater Wolves in the knock out cup (group stages) where they will look to return to winning ways. Wellington are lying tenth in the Under 15 division while Wolves are 13th.
