WELLINGTON AFC hosted its biggest-ever Under 9s Finals Day, welcoming 15 teams from across the region for a fantastic day of youth football in glorious sunshine.

With 150 people in attendance, the event showcased not only the growing popularity of grassroots football, but also the incredible community spirit surrounding Wellington AFC.

Teams involved included: Wellington, Galmington, Rhode Lane, Bridgwater VPR, Watchet, Minehead, Bidhops Lydeard, Huish Tigers and North Curry.

A key focus of the day was ensuring every child felt part of the occasion. Every player received a medal and certificate, with teams also competing for winners’ medals and the tournament trophy.

A really close contest among all teams throughout the day, fantastic football on show from all teams!

Congratulations to Wellington Tigers who were crowned overall champions after a superb team performance. Ben, Kai, Tom, Arlo, Carter and Harry worked brilliantly together to bring home the cup for Wellington.

Congratulations also to VPR Hawks, Watchet Swords and Huish Tigers Oranges who took top spot in the Shield, Plate and Bowl competitions too.

The club would also like to thank N.B Construction for kindly sponsoring the referees for the event. All matches were officiated by newly-qualified Under 18 referees from Axe Valley Academy in Devon, who did a fantastic job.

Behind the scenes, the event was made possible thanks to a huge team effort from Wellington families and volunteers. Parents, grandparents and family friends all played their part - with car parking duties, cake making, raffle prizes, refreshments.

Gary Hart, tournament organiser, said: “It was fantastic to see so many young players enjoying football in such a positive environment. The standard of football was excellent, but more importantly every child had the opportunity to be part of a finals day of their own. The support from families, volunteers and sponsors was incredible.”
