WELLINGTON have signed a second goalkeeper - Josh Mclean and he goes straight into the side for Saturday’s away match against Westbury United in the Premier Division of the Toolstation League.

Mclean plays principally because last season’s regular goalkeeper Tom Welch is not available. “Josh is only 19 years old and I’ve watched his progress for the past four years,” said Wellington boss Clive Jones. “We now have two goalkeepers and competition for places is healthy.”

“I now have to reduce my squad from 21 to 14 on Saturday. Obviously, some players are going to be disappointed which is only natural.

“But we have a long season ahead of us and lots of things can happen between now and next April.

“I’m happy with the set of players I have but I am still working on one more to strengthen the squad. I may not get him for this weekend but I will keep trying until I do.

“It’s going to be tough at Westbury but I will not judge how we’re doing until we have played five games. I will have a better picture by then.”

“I’m also pleased with the way training has gone. Ben (Welch) has done a good job and enabled me to talk to players individually.

“We’ve had good workouts in friendlies but the results don’t really matter. It’s what I learn about players which matters.”
