IT’S been a great start to this season’s covid disrupted campaign for Wellington Reserves in Division One West of the Devon and Exeter Football League. Winning all six of their opening games has created a fantastic buzz in the squad.

The Reserves have managed to score freely, goals from all over park. Josh Baker, Liam Thorne, and Rohan Poulsom are all on four goals and the returning Luke Perry is already on five.

They have tried to play open, attacking football and work to press high out of possession and so far they are getting the rewards. The energy and effort of the squad is what is most satisfying to see. They really work hard for each other.

The majority of the work and preparation started back in June. The lads, all locally based, committed whole heartedly to their pre-season programme which – assisted and created well by Ben Welch - has definitely helped them develop as a group and individually.

The squad has also benefited from some young blossoming talent, which has added depth to the squad. Wes Poulsom, brother Rohan, Logan Sellick, Danny Nicholls, Cam Perry-Jones and keeper Rob Hall all continue to impress.

The signing of Hemyock midfielder Connor Foster has added an extra dimension to midfield. Skipper Mark Owen continues to keep the team in order on the pitch, and Clay Westcott’s decision to not hang his boots up was a huge bonus. Competition for places in the squad is so strong right now, it’s great having such a motivated group to select from.

There is still got a long way to go, and Covid may yet have a significant say in the season, but so far, so good.
