BOTH the main rugby and football matches in Wellington over the weekend were postponed because of the bad weather.

The rugby game at the Athletic Ground between Wellington and Plymouth Argaum was called off at 10 a.m. on Saturday following a pitch inspection.

Wellington, lying second in the Cornwall and Devon League, were chasing the season’s double over their opponents, having won 50-0 earlier this season and looking to extend their winning run which goes back four months.

Wellington’s football match at home to leaders Street in the Premier Division of the Toolstation League was also called off at the same time because of a waterlogged pitch.

Wellington would have again been without top scorer Ian Bellinger who has been struggling with a knee injury since before Christmas.

“We definitely miss him,” said Wellington manager Clive Jones. “Bell’s football mad. He’s still playing on Sundays - but on one leg. I fear his injury is long-term. He brings so much to our side - he can score goals and sets them up too.”

There is better news for Wellington about club captain Sam Bryant who missed all of last season with a knee injury.

He has been struggling with a recurrence of the injury but was due to play for the reserves on Saturday at Perry Street and Yonder Hill in the Devon and Exeter League but this game, too, was postponed.

Jones held a training session for all his players at the Playing Field on Saturday afternoon.
