TOOLSTATION League club Wellington have strengthened their first team squad by signing two defenders.

Luke Taylor, 21, has been snapped up from Taunton Saturday League champions Bridgwater Sports, while John Rawlings, 25, who played a few games

for Wellington last season,

joins from St Martins who play in the Devon and Exeter League.

“I needed to bring in a couple of defenders to bring the squad up to 15,” said Jones yesterday. “I have told the players these will be the last signings – unless things go pearshaped.

“We have 16 games left in the first division – and each one of them is massive. The players have not been in this situation before. I have set out a plan. I’m not a manager who takes each game as it comes. I look five matches ahead.

“We have individual targets and team targets. We’re in a good situation and we have to grasp it. I believe the championship is now down to six teams – anyone of which could win it.”

Meanwhile Wellington will be looking to stretch their unbeaten league record to 20 matches when they play away to Ashton & Backwell United in the first division of the Toolstation League on Saturday.

“It will not be an easy match because Ashton won at Chard 2-0 on Saturday and their ground is tight and compact – it’s not an easy place to go to,” said Jones.

With 16 matches remaining, Wellington are now six points clear of the field – and also have a game in hand on the top teams below them.

“I have set a target for the number of points I want, and I’ve told the players,” added Jones.

“I was not very pleased with our display against Bishop Sutton (won 3-1) on Saturday.

“We dominated the game but couldn’t score which was very frustrating. I thought for most of the game it was going to be one of those days.

“Fortunately, we didn’t panic and kept our shape.”

Wellington Reserves will be back in action after a long break when they play top of the table Cronies FC in Division One of the Devon and Exeter League at home on Saturday (2.15).

Hemyock are away to Lyme Regis Reserves in Division 6 while leaders Wellington Thirds are home to Woodbury Reserves in Division Seven.
