BEN Welch, 37, has been appointed assistant-manager of Toolstation League Premier Division club Wellington.

Wellington boss Clive Jones has been without an assistant since former goalkeeper Ian Nott underwent a knee operation earlier this season.

Welch has had the difficult job of running both the reserve and third sides in recent months and Jones, announcing his appointment, said: “It is a great move for him and he will be a big help to me.

“He studies the game and is very enthusiastic about whatever he does. I’m hoping Ian will return to us in some capacity next season.”

Meanwhile Jones has also announced the appointment of Paul Pocock, 40, as manager of the reserves who play in the Devon and Exeter League. Pocock’s playing career included spells with Willand Rovers, Exmouth Town, Glastonbury, Clist Rovers and Wellington.

Jones, who has just completed his third full season in charge of Welling-ton, said: “Paul is an experienced player who has been a very successful youth team manager in recent years. He is also very enthusiastic and will bring a lot to the club. What the reserves do not have he will bring to them. It will be up to Paul to decide whether he plays or not. He is also talking to people regarding helping him.”
