TIM Legg, one of the key players in Wellington’s title-winning football team last season, has confirmed he will be remaining with the Toolstation League outfit.
“It’s great news for us because Leggie is a very influential player in our side,” said Wellington’s manager Clive Jones. “He played at centre-back last season but he’s equally as good in the middle of the park. He has said, however, that he would consider a move to a bigger club if an offer ever came along.”
Legg is one of the most experienced players at Wellington, having also played Southern League football for Taunton and Bridgwater Town.
Another big bonus for Jones this week is the news that goalscoring midfielder Glen Wright has also committed himself to Wellington for another season.
Wright, who moved to the area from Sussex, scored nine goals for Wellington in his first season.
The decisions of Legg and Wright to stay with the club come only a week after top scorers Jack Taylor and Ian Bellinger announced they wanted to stay.
The pair, who scored 43 goals between them last season, live in the Bridgwater area and their home club have tried to persuade them to sign for them.
“Everything is coming together quite nicely,” added Jones who is trying to get round to see every member of last season’s championship winning squad individually.
However, there is still a question mark over the future of skipper and centre-back Tom Ellis, who was outstanding last season. Jones has yet to speak to him.
Wellington won the first division in the Toolstation League last season and will now be moving up to play in the Premier Division.
Jones’ big fear during the summer was that he might lose players to clubs following his side’s success, especially as Wellington do not pay their players.
“I would not hold it against any player who had the chance to play for a team in a higher league,” said Jones. “In fact I would gladly help them.
“But I don’t go too much on a player wanting to play for another team at this level or lower.”
Wellington have four pre-season friendlies so far arranged - all away - against Exmouth Town, Elmore, Witheridge and Axminster Town - and Jones is looking to arrange one more.
Wellington’s players report back for pre-season training on Thursday, July 6, a week later than usual.
