WELLINGTON United are out of the Taunton Youth League’s Under 13 Cup despite a spirited display against Division One side Middlezoy Rovers Meteors.

The first half started fast as expected and United conceded in the first two minutes. This made the Wellington boys rise to the challenge and they fought hard to keep the scoreline down. But they also found themselves in shooting positions.

However, with pressure also coming fast from the visitors Wellington then found themselves in their own box scrambling for the clearance which unfortunately deflected from a Middlezoy player’s back and unfortunately beating the home keeper.

Starting the second half 2-0 down, Wellington again came under pressure from the visitors. United got stuck in defensively but the visitors were finding openings and getting through on goal but also not taking the opportunity to score.

United then conceded a penalty but the visiters sent the spot-kick wide - much to the home players joy.

A little more end to end football and the hosts started to tire with the visitors scoring two goals. Wellington kept up the fight to try to deny the division 1 side, tackles going in left right and centre . But Wellington conceded a free kick to which the visitors sent a ‘worldie’ in past the home keeper; then after another five minutes the visitors found the net again.

United kept fighting and enjoyed more action in the final third but again struggled to find the net with Meteors eventually winning 6-0.

Manager Steve Newstead said: “After a very even first half it’s unfortunate to go out this way but the better team won, congrats to them”.

Coach Richard Upham said: “If we can show the same fighting spirit in league games we’ll move on very quickly.”

United’s POTM was Zach W who controlled the midfield. Again thanks to the side’s sponsor “The Gutter Doctor”.
