WELLINGTON Wildcats made their longest trip of the season to Midsomer Norton with just 11 players, producing an exciting nine-goal thriller in Division One of the Under 15 section in the Somerset Girls Football League.
Both teams started brightly, using pace and passing to create early chances. Hallie SH threaded a terrific pass to Flo G, who cut inside from the left and finished smartly for her first Wildcats goal. Norton hit back almost immediately, and a frantic 15 minutes saw the score reach 3–3. Flo N dazzled with her skill and creativity, scoring twice and linking brilliantly with Imogen M on the right and the central pairing of Hallie SH and Kacie W.
At the other end, tiring legs and a lapse in concentration from a corner allowed Norton to equalise before halftime.
After the break, the game slowed, allowing Wildcats to play some superb football. Hallie SH restored the lead with a stunning 25-yard free kick into the top corner. Norton soon replied with a well-taken penalty, then struck again from 18 yards to go 5–4 ahead.
Despite exhaustion, captain Jess B rallied the team for a final push. Their best chance came when Flo N was brought down in the box, but the resulting penalty rolled agonisingly wide after sending the keeper the wrong way.
The narrow 5–4 loss left the girls disappointed, but their determination, teamwork, and resilience under tough conditions were outstanding and bode well for the 2026 season.
Player of the Match was shared between Kacie W and Imogen M. Usually a right back, Imogen impressed on the wing and even filled in as a striker, constantly threatening. Kacie delivered her best performance yet in central midfield, contributing equally to attack and defence. Every single player deserves recognition for their character and commitment.
