WELLINGTON Football Club have not ruled out holding their annual meeting next month in the open on the Playing Field – and they could break with tradition and hold it on a Sunday.

The club’s vice-chairman Graham Aspin says they have various options – it could be held in the clubhouse or they could hold a Zoom meeting.

“Obviously, we cannot say what will happen because of all the uncertainty,” he said. “It affects us both on and off the field.

“We cannot decide on a playing budget for the first team because we’ve had little money coming in with the clubhouse being closed for several weeks. And we don’t know whether our sponsors will be able to continue helping us financially. Like all sports clubs we still have bills to pay.”

The Wellington club has also been prevented from ‘doing odd jobs’ at the ground because of the lockdown.

“We have members willing to help but obviously they cannot do anything because of the present situation,” added Aspin, a no-nonsense defender when he played.

“We are also in the dark about when we can start playing. It looks like August and September will be out. It could be October but no-one really knows. It is this uncertainly which is causing all sorts of problems, not only for sport but businesses too.”

The Wellington club are one of the most active in Somerset, running nearly 30 teams, catering for six years of age upwards.

The first team play in the Premier Division of the Toolstation League with most clubs paying their players. Wellington operate on an expenses basis rather than paying wages.

Tim Legg is continuing as manager with Sean Buttle taking charge of the Reserves.
