BRIDGWATER TOWN 2
WELLINGTON 1
WELLINGTON played for more than half the game with only ten players after centre back Kai Fisher was sent off at Bridgwater in the Premier Division of the Toolstation League on Tuesday night.
The game appeared to be heading for a goalless first half when Fisher, playing his first game of the season for Wellington, was given his marching orders in the 41st minute for an alleged off the ball ‘head butt’.
Wellington managed to hang on in the second half – thanks to two splendid saves by goalkeeper Chandler Hallett – before Bridgwater broke the deadlock in the 64th minute. Mark Armstrong was the scorer, heading home a wicked cross by Jack Taylor, one of eight ex-Wellington players in Bridgwater’s squad.
Another former Wellington player Conor Bryant came on as a second half substitute and virtually ended Wellington’s hopes of a point when he latched onto a fine through ball to score with a left-footed shot.
But there was still time for Wellington to score – and it was netted by Jason Quick who struck with a brilliant looping header over Bridgwater goalkeeper Jake Viney, yet another ex-Wellington player who made the 15-mile journey up the motorway.
The turning point in this game was the dismissal of Fisher who was signed on the day because of Wellington’s number of injuries. He started the season on Saturdays with Bovey Tracey but has just been transferred to Axminster Town.
Wellington: Chandler Hallett, Josh Champion, Jason Quick, Kai Fisher, Jack Lewis, Ollie Holman, Mason Raymond, Scott Merritt, Miles Quick, George Sinnott, Jesse Howe. Substitutes: Tim Legg, Max Dyer and Wes Poulsom (all used). Attendance: 262.
