AFTER being unbeaten at home in the third division of the Taunton & District Youth Football League this season, Wellington United Under 13s welcomed Ruishton Rockets to the second pitch at the Playing Field.
After the first meeting ended 5-4 to Ruishton, the Wellington boys knew they had a job on their hands. From the whistle the hosts applied the pressure and played some really good creative football and on multiple occasions found themselves able to take a shot in front of goal but unfortunately failed to capitalise on their scoring chances.
The boys kept the game on their terms for the first half finishing at the break 0-0.
In the second half the visitors really started to apply the pressure to the home team. United were holding fast until conceding a corner with about 15 minutes to go. The visitors delivered a cracking corner kick to which their number 20 found the perfect volley and beat the Wellington keeper to net the opening goal. This goal fired up the hosts who responded with a great fight back and found four shots denied by the visitors heavy defence. For all their hard work the game ended 1-0 to the visitors. Manager Steve Newstead said: “This was another great game where the hard work was not reflected in the scoreline but I’m really impressed with the boys performance”. Coach Richard Upham added: “I’m gutted for the result but really proud of the boys”. Well done to all the boys and well done to POTM Caleb J-H who worked tirelessly in Utds back line to keep them in the game.
A big thank-you goes to the side’s sponsors The Gutter Docter for their continued support throughout the season. It is much appreciated by the boys and management.
