WELLINGTON look to strengthen their position at the top of Division One in the Toolstation League when they play away to Roman Glass St George this coming Saturday.
Clive Jones’ boys are two points clear of second-placed Keynsham Town, who missed a great chance of going top themselves when they lost 2-1 away to Chippenham Park at the weekend. “We mustn’t take too much notice of that result,” said Jones. “We must focus on our own form.”
Jones called his players in for training on Saturday afternoon after the home game against Cheddar was called off because of the rain and frost.
“I consider Cheddar to be our main rivals for the championship,” added Jones. “It was good to see Keynsham dropping points but we must not let this distract us. I think the big challenge will come from Cheddar. I’ve always thought this.”
This Saturday’s game at Roman Glass will be played on their opponents’ 3G pitch - a surface he does not like.
“I believe they have an advantage because they play on it every other week. There is only one other club in our division who play on such a surface. These kind of pitches are all right for training purposes but you have to play differently on them in matches. It is very difficult for defenders if you don’t play regularly on such a surface - there won’t be many tackles. However, having said that, I’m looking forward to the game.”
Jones hopes that both Ian Bellinger (broken hand) and Conor Bryant (concussion) will be fit.
“Ian will have to have a light dressing on his hand if he plays, while I will be having a chat with Conor later this week as to whether he plays,” added Jones. “Conor wants to play in every game but we have to be 100 per cent certain he is fit. He feels a lot better than last week.”
Wellington Reserves hope to be back in action when they play at home to Willand Rovers Reserves who have picked up only two more points than the Reserves who have four matches in hand.
Hemyock are away to Haxton Rangers, who play in Intermediate One of the North Devon League, in the Devon Intermediate Cup quarter finals while top of the table Wellington Thirds are home to third-placed Cranbrook in Division Seven of the Devon and Exeter League.
