WELLINGTON soccer players could be in for some earbashing from manager Clive Jones at training tonight (Feb 15).
Jones was not a happy bunny after Saturday’s 1-1 draw away to Roman Glass St George on their opponents 3G pitch in Division One of the Toolstation League.
Although they remain top, Wellington have now gone four matches without a victory and their lead at the top has now been reduced from six to one point.
Jones said last night: “I take full responsibility because I’m the manager. We played well in the first half but we had a 20-minute spell in the second half when we were awful.
“It’s the worst period of play since I became manager of Wellington.
“I will be sitting down with the players at training and having a frank discussion with them.
“I felt some of the players folded on Saturday. I don’t want to be negative. We’ve been having too many of these 20 minute spells.
“Something is going wrong at the moment and I need to know what. I take full responsibility because I pick the side.”
Wellington are hoping the lively Ian Bellinger (broken hand) will be back in action for the home game against Oldlands Abbotonians on Saturday (3.00). “Bells has a plastic cast on the hand at the moment but he’s hoping he can get something more lighter on it for Saturday,” added Jones. “He would not be allowed to play with it as it is.”
Wellington go into Saturday’s game chasing the season’s double over Oldland, having won 3-0 away against their opponents earlier this season.
Wellington are one point ahead of main rivals Cheddar, both sides having played the same number of games.
Wellington Reserves, who gained a crucial 5-1 home victory over fellow strugglers Willand Rovers Reserves in Division One of the Devon and Exeter League on Saturday, are again without a fixture. It’s been very much a stop-start season for the Reserves.
Hemyock, who are through to the semi-finals of the Devon Intermediate Cup after a fine 2-1 away victory over Haxton Rangers, are home to bottom side Hatherleigh Reserves in Division Six, while Wellington Thirds, still hanging on to top spot in Division Seven, are also without a fixture.
Milverton Rangers, hammered 7-0 at home by Wembdon in Division Two of the Taunton Saturday League, have another tough game - away to leaders Creech FC.
