BOTTOM side Wellington provided another battling display before losing 4-0 away to highflyers Liskeard Athletic in the Premier Division of the Jewson Western League.

It was another tough afternoon for the Tangerines who were playing their third game in eight days against a side from the top five.

The home side enjoyed the better of the attacking opportunities throughout the contest, although Wellington worked hard defensively, with Jack Lewis making several important interventions and goalkeeper Luke Vernon producing a string of fine saves, including a penalty.

Wellington defender Connor Pengelly suffered an injury after only 13 minutes and U18s player Freddie Jarman came on at right-back with Harry Chetland moving into central defence.

Liskeard were awarded a penalty midway through the first half following a challenge by Vernon on a home striker but the keeper produced a superb stop from Jack Crago’s spot kick.

Wellington almost made the most of that reprieve immediately afterwards, breaking forward at the other end where Lewis Oaten forced Liskeard goalkeeper Ollie Chenoweth into a smart save.

However, the breakthrough arrived for the hosts five minutes later when George Marris latched on to another long ball over the top and slotted past Vernon to give them lead.

Liskeard doubled their advantage just two minutes later. A move ended with the ball being played across the penalty area where Crago finished into the top corner.

More Liskeard pressure eventually told in the 52nd minute when a ball pulled back found Kai Gilbert, who extended the home side’s lead.

And Liskeard added a fourth after 65 minutes. Lewis initially produced a goal-line clearance, but the loose ball fell to Lorenz who fired home.
