WELLINGTON Wildcats are setting the early pace at the top of Under 13 South in the Somerset Girls Football League after gaining a 2-0 away victory over Westlands.
Wildcats started brightly, causing problems down the right wing through Emilia S, who broke through and had a couple of early chances. Westlands put up some solid defence and were determined not to let Wildcats have an easy day.
The breakthrough came from a superb corner from Emilia S which was met by Hetty H at the back post to volley home. This was how the first half ended with the Wildcats probably edging possession.
Westlands came out for the second-half with the same determination and thought they had drawn level but for the ‘scorer’ being off-side. Another chance came Westlands’ way when a speculative cross bounced off the top of the crossbar.
These incidents were a bit of a wake-up call and the Wildcats started to take control. They soon extended their lead when a corner from Sara M went directly in via a slight deflection off the goalkeeper.
The game ended with a deserved win for the Wildcats with Stevie W securing player of the match with an outstanding performance in defence.
Wildcats are up to fourth in Division Two of the Under 15 section after beating Middlezoy 2-0 at home on a very foggy and cold Saturday morning.
Wellington started well by keeping the ball and playing it around. Most of the play was with Wellington who could not put the finishing touches to some good attacking play with Alishia J and Anya S bossing the right side of the pitch. Maisie W was playing well in midfield with Cheyenne and Ruby working together in their new partnership up top.
Midway through the 1st half Wellington got their reward with a fine effort from Hallie. After the goal Wellington kept on creating chances but the Middlezoy keeper was in fine form.
Wellington were on the front foot again in the second half, creating many chances with Casey P, Ruby A, Cheyenne C and Alishia J all going close, with either London or Leah clearing up anything which did come their way.
Finally Wellington got their second through Casey P through a lovely curly shot along the ground beating the keeper. POTM: Alishia J
Wildcats were involved in an entertaining match against leaders Bishops Lydeard in Under 12 South section, with the final score not reflecting how evenly contested much of the game was.
Wildcats made a strong start and enjoyed the better of the opening ten minutes. Lydeard gradually grew into the game, however, and made the most of their chances to take a 2–0 lead into half-time.
The game continued to be competitive, with both teams working hard, creating chances and showing real determination. Lydeard demonstrated their quality in front of goal, finishing their opportunities well, while Abbey T put in a strong performance in the Wildcats goal, commanding her area confidently throughout. The final score was 5-0.
Player of the Match went to Betsy P, whose determination stood out from start to finish. She battled tirelessly for possession, created several chances and made some excellent runs with the ball, really testing the Lydeard defence.
Despite the scoreline, Wildcats can take plenty from an enjoyable and competitive game, particularly their effort and willingness to keep going.
