WELLINGTON slumped to an 8-0 away defeat against Weston super Mare in the second round of the Somerset Premier Cup on Tuesday night.

The result - and the size of victory - was no surprise as Weston play three divisions higher than Wellington.

Wellington held firm for the first 20 minutes before Weston broke the deadlock. Will Dawes gave goalkeeper Luke Vernon no chance with a superbly struck free-kick and doubled the lead seven minutes later, cutting inside from the right before driving the ball inside the far post.

Leighton Green added the third in the 32nd minute, squeezing the ball home after Weston broke forward. He struck again seven minutes later, tapping in a cross to make it 4-0 at half-time.

Dawes completed his hat-trick six minutes after the restart with a sweetly struck drive from 30 yards.

A fine double block on the line denied Weston a sixth before Vernon, who impressed throughout, pulled off another sharp save.

Weston went further ahead in the 66th minute when James Watts ran on to a ball and finished clinically. Theo Evans made it seven eight minutes later, converting a cross from the right.

Wellington’s best effort came in the 84th minute when Ben Evett’s fierce drive drew a fine save. Four minutes later, Weston substitute Freddie Pegler was sent off for pulling back skipper Josh Baker.

Harry Logan completed the scoring in the 90th minute, volleying home a cross from the right.
