WELLINGTON 1
PLYMOUTH PARKWAY 6
BIG-SPENDING Parkway maintained their three-point lead at the top of the Premier Division in the Toolstation League with this big victory at the Playing Field on Wednesday night.
Wellington manager Tim Legg’s advice to his side would have been not to concede early on. They did not heed the warning and found themselves two goals down in 12 minutes.
The home side managed a goal themselves in the 15th minute but Parkway restored their two-goal lead two minutes later – and looked set for a big score.
At 5-1 early in the second half Parkway were in a position to cause some serious damage but Wellington held firm until the 91st minute when Parkway rounded off the scoring.
It was Parkway’s sixth victory in seven games – the other being drawn. Wellington, on the other hand, have yet to win this season and have only two points from five matches.
Parkway’s playing budget is huge compared to that of Wellington’s and it was clear early on they were a slick outfit with River Allen (7th minute) and Craig Veal (12) putting them 2-0 up. Glen Wright, playing his first game of the season because of injury, scored to make it 2-1 after 15 minutes but Veal snapped up his second goal after 17 minutes. Allen scored Parkway’s fourth not long before half time.
Billy Palfrey scored with a brilliant volley five minutes into the second half for Parkway after the interval and Wellington’s supporters were wondering if they were going to watch a humiliating defeat.
Wellington held on, preventing Parkway scoring again until a minute into injury time when substitute Levi Landricombe burst through to score a sixth for the visitors.
The attendance of 157 was the best of the night in the Premier Division.
n Wellington continue their busy schedule of matches with an away game against Hallen, who have made an equally poor start to the season, tomorrow (Saturday) and follow this with a game away to Bridgwater Town on Tuesday. The sides were drawing 3-3 in injury time at the Playing Field last month when the game was abandoned because of a floodlight failure.
Wellington Reserves, the early leaders of Division One West in the Devon and Somerset League, are home again tomorrow (Saturday) – to Westexe Park Rangers.
Wellington A are home to Creech Cougars in the Taunton Saturday League KO Cup.
