WELLINGTON Reds' hopes of winning the first division in the Taunton & District Saturday Football League suffered a setback when they lost 4-2 away to Bridgwater Grasshoppers.
Despite going two up through two well worked goals with Jack Lewis and Aaron Hill both scoring and assisting each other and going in 2-1 up at half time, the lack of options off the bench and a couple of very questionable decisions from the referee ultimately cost Reds dearly.
Grasshoppers scored late in the game to make it 3-2 and then in added time scored again to make it 4-2.
The previous weekend, Reds faced bottom of the league Galmington Reserves in one of the few games not to fall foul of the weather that weekend.
Sluggish to start with, the Reds didn't find their groove. It wasn't until a bloody nose forced a sub and Dave Darch came on and added some much needed spark.
Reds, the footballing section of the local cricket club, eventually ran out 4-2 winners after Galmington battled well and gave a good account of themselves.
Meanwhile, Reds play at home to Bridgwater Sports in a league match at the Playing Field on Saturday, March 8, before playing away to Sporting Weston Reserves in the quarter-finals of the Somerset Intermediate Cup the following weekend.
Meanwhile, Galmington stretched their lead at the top of the Premier Division in the Saturday League when they won 7-2 at home against lowly Wyvern United. Wembdon, in second place, dropped two crucial points when they were held to a 3-3 home draw by last season's champions Redgate who led 2-1 at half time.
In Division One, leaders Dunwear gained a 7-1 home success over Galmington Reserves to open up a two-point lead at the top of the table.
Reds, in third spot despite their loss to Grasshoppers, are only six points behind Dunwear.
