JOSH Wadham, who played for Toolstation League premier division champions Street last season, has signed for Wellington - much to the delight of manager Clive Jones.
“He’s quality and it’s given me and the club a big lift,” said Jones. “I just need one more player and I think we will be fine.”
Wadham, who scored 16 goals from midfield last season, has joined Wellington because he does not want to play for Street in the Southern League, mainly because of the travelling. He previously played for Taunton Town.
“The thing about Josh’s signing is that we did not go after him, he came to us,” said Jones. “He’s a good mate of Joe Chamberlain. We also faced competition from Bridgwater for his signature.”
His signing comes only a week after Kai Fisher, who captained Barnstaple Town in the Southern League last season, agreed to rejoin the club.
Fisher can play in both defence and attack and Jones rates him as “good as any centre back in the Toolstation League.”
Meanwhile, Wellington’s vice-chairman Graham Aspin has announced a sponsorship scheme to enable Jones to keep his best players.
Wellington do not pay their players which means that some might find it attractive to switch to a club with a wage bill.
“The idea is to find supporters willing to put in £10 a week,” said Aspin, a former player. “We already have six or seven willing to do this. What we need is a similar number and Clive will be able to use this to pay players and maybe even attract new players.
“At the moment he has one hand tied behind his back. There’s always the danger that he could lose a really good player because we’re not paying them. He will be allowed to use the money as he sees fit. Whether everyone gets the same amount depends on him.”
The scheme has been described as “brilliant” by Jones who said: “This will certainly help me although I came to Wellington knowing they were not paying players.”
Anyone interested in joining the scheme can contact Aspin on 07771533856.
