WELLINGTON Town welcomed Staplegrove Youth Spartans to the Playing Field for a second round tie in the Taunton & District Youth Football League’s Under 15 Cup - and put up a spirited display before losing 2-0.
Town, who were looking to apply early pressure, found themselves behind inside the first minute - a speculative looping effort from range giving the visitors an early lead.
In an otherwise evenly contested first 40 minutes, with neither side able to carve out more than a handful of half-chances, it was Staplegrove who went into the half-time break the happier of the two teams.
But within a minute of the restart, Welly found themselves further behind - Staplegrove extending their lead with only their second attempt on goal.
Town, driven on by their hard-working midfield duo of Ryan M and Zac F, looked increasinging threatening as the half unfolded - Jack B coming close to pulling one back for the visitors as he forced an outstanding save from the Spartans keeper in the 60th minute.
And while Welly battled throughout, it was to be Staplegrove's day in a game of few scoring chances.
