WELLINGTON Town welcomed an in-form Isle Of Wedmore Lions side to the Recreation Ground on Sunday for their Division One clash in the Under 15 section of the Taunton and District Youth Football League.

Wedmore - notoriously physical - were on the front foot from the start as Wellington struggled to maintain possession. And after a series of impressive attacking opportunities, the visitors had their opener - an error at the back gifting the Lion's striker a simple tap on 12 minutes.

A goal behind, Welly sprung to life - Fletcher L with two golden opportunities to draw things level in the 21st minute - both shots drifting agonisingly wide after some superb link-up play between Town's front men.

But it was Wedmore who landed the killer blows - two goals inside the final five minutes of the half leaving Welly with a mountain to climb.

Welly’s defence - marshalled by Matt T, who delivered an exceptionally dogged performance at fullback against a lively Wedmore attack - were again kept busy after the restart. But the visitors didn't have it all their own way. Always threatening on the break, Welly crafted a series of excellent chances as they looked to claw a goal back - Seb N coming closest after a teasing cross from winger Reece B found the Wellington striker in space in the 64th minute.

However, the game was put to bed moments later - Wedmore extending their lead in the 66th minute before Fletcher L met Sam A's through ball to give the hosts a consolation goal 10 minutes from time. For Welly, this was a spirited performance in defeat - one that they'll look to learn from as the season unfolds.

Defeat left Wellington in mid-table while Isle of Wedmore have climbed to fourth, only three points behind the leaders Middlezoy Rovers Mustangs.
