WELLINGTON continue their run of home football matches with another tough game against former leaders Malmesbury Victoria in Division One of the Toolstation League on Saturday (3.00).
Wellington are unbeaten at home in the league this season although they dropped two crucial points in a 1-1 home draw against third-placed Hengrove Athletic over the weekend.
“I said at the beginning of the season that Hengrove would be there or thereabouts,” said Wellington’s manager Clive Jones last night.
“They are a good side - the best we’ve seen at the Playing Field this season. We didn’t play that well so I think the result was a fair one.
“This Saturday’s game is another big one for us. I don’t know much about them but they are obviously a good side because they were top of the table earlier this season.”
Wellington’s squad for Saturday will be strengthened by the return of goalkeeper Connor Sidley-Adams, Tim Legg and Conor Bryant who were unavailable for various reasons for the game against Hengrove.
“We have a strong squad and we’re able to cope without some players,” added Jones whose side dropped back to second on goal difference following the dropped points against Hengrove. However they have a game in hand on leaders Keynsham Town.
Jones refuses to discuss possible promotion or, indeed, whether the club would have to consider paying players if they were to be promoted.
“I have no problem with not paying players - I knew that when I came here,” he said. “I do this for nothing but I wouldn’t do it for any club. Wellington is my home club. This is where I started my football and I am really enjoying it.”
The only player from Saturday missing this weekend is recent signing Sam Towler who is suspended for one match following being sent off.
Wellington Reserves, who were without a match on Saturday, are away to Witheridge Reserves in Division One of the Devon and Somerset League while Hemyock, who won a penalty shootout against Riviera United in the Devon Intermediate Cup, are away to Offwell Rangers in Division Six.
Wellington Thirds, who top Division Seven, are away to Cheriton Fitzpaine in Division Seven.
