WELLINGTON United lost 5-1 away to FC Rhinos in Division Three of the Taunton & District Youth League on a chilly Saturday morning at Victoria Park.

The boys went away off the back of a good win the previous weekend but failed to take the momentum forward from the off, looking a little sluggish and struggling to get going.

They went a goal down at 10 minutes and then started to warm to the game and began to put up a fight until conceding a controversial free kick on the edge of the box at 20 minutes. The free kick was taken with United’s keeper thinking it was wide but it slipped into the net and turned out to be a cracking goal. Wellington continued to fight on to hold the score at 2-0 at the break. United began the second half creating chances but not able to capitalise on them. On 40 minutes Wellington conceded a third goal but the boys kept up the fight against a weakening Rhinos side. However, the home team found a way through only five minutes later to net another.

Not giving up Utd continued to link up and create chances only to be shut down by the home team’s centre backs, and once again the home team got the break and netted a fifth.

With the Welly boys feeling slightly deflated they kept pushing and eventually their hard work paid off with Leo Upham finding the net assisted by Oscar Boucher. A few more chances came Wellington’s way but the visitors could not score again. Manager Steve Newstead said: “The scoreline didn’t really reflect the game but that’s football”. Coach Richard Upham added: “Personally I don’t think the result showed how well we played” Well done to player of the match Theo K who brought the perfect attitude and made an important impact.
