WELLINGTON AFC Under 13 Wanderers made the short trip into Taunton where Staplegrove ran a brilliant seven-a-side tournament. It was the Wanderers’ third such event in the space of eight days.
Wanderers entered two teams and there was a great belief and confidence around the squad that it was going to be a good day.
The Wanderers’ team playing on pitch two made it to the final after topping their group with two wins and two draws.
The Wanderers side on pitch one did very well, too, with one win, two draws and a loss getting them into the quarter finals. Wanderers managed to win this quarter on penalties and then faced a stiff task against Victoria Park Rangers from Bridgwater in the semi-finals. Unfortunately, they put up another fine show before losing out on penalties after a very close match ending in a draw. However, it was a fantastic performance all day to reach the semis.
The Wanderers’ team on pitch 2 faced off against Perry Street in the final, after both sides went into the game not losing a match, so it was always going to be a close affair.
It was Perry Street who took the lead and with time running out Wanderers threw everything they had at them to get the equaliser. It was super sub Oli t who fired home after a scramble in the box to send it to penalties.
It was nervous times as Wanderers missed the first pen but with Evan Aspin in goal they also fancied their chance. Evan made some great saves and the boys held their nerve and Wanderers managed to get their first win at one of these tournaments.
It was a great day for the Wanderers with a win and a semifinal spot. The boys should all be proud of what they have achieved.
