HAVING moved the match to a local 3G pitch, the wet weather wasn’t going to stop Wellington Wildcats playing their away game against Pen Mill in the Somerset Girls Football League’s Under 12 Cup.

It was also good news for the Wildcats as this was their first competitive game in two months - yet they shook off the rustiness to win 3-1.

Wildcats started the better team and opening the scoring with captain Hetty H getting back into her usual rhythm after a long injury lay off. The goal came from great work on the right-hand side by Sara M, who pulled the ball back for Hetty to tap home.

Still dominating, Wildcats extended their lead when Bea D played a cutting ball through from defence and Emilia S won the race with the opposition goalkeeper to score.

Pen Mill dug in at the end of the half beginning to cause some problems for the Wildcats, before the halftime whistle went.

Wildcats went out to play the second half against the very strong wind. Pen Mill started the second half as they finished the first and were rewarded when the ball was crossed in to find their striker at the back post where she smartly lost her defender to slot home.

This was the catalyst for the Wildcats to take control, and they did so in style. With some fine defending to win the ball back, it was played up to Sara M who found Millie G driving towards the edge of the box, where she unleashed a thunderbolt that cannoned into the goal off the crossbar.

As the Wildcats extended their lead, they took control to see out the remainder of the match while creating a couple more chances but unable to beat the opposition goalkeeper. Player of the match went to Sara M for her persistence up front.
