WELLINGTON Wildcats youth teams showed grit, determination and flashes of quality across a tough weekend of fixtures in the Somerset Girls Football League.
The U11s put in a tremendous effort against Street, adapting well to a difficult pitch and matching their opponents in every department. With the score level at half time, it looked as though the Wildcats might take a point, but a last-minute goal gave Street the win. Despite the result, the U11s can take pride in their resilience, teamwork and clear progress they have made already this season.
The Under 12s travelled to North Curry for a top-of-the-table clash. A slow start saw them concede twice early on, but captain and player of the match Hetty H inspired a revival. Emilia S kept them in the contest with a poacher’s finish just before half-time, and the Wildcats pressed hard after the break. However, North Curry proved clinical, extending their lead to run out 6–1 winners. Remi S shone in goal with another brave display, while the team’s spirit never wavered.
Elsewhere, the Wildcats Under 13s started strongly against Swiss Valley, with Madeline H-W scoring her third goal in as many games after a fine move. Though Swiss Valley hit back to go 2–1 ahead, the Wildcats responded through a superb lob from Scarlett H to earn a 2–2 draw and preserve their unbeaten run. Mary H was named player of the match for her tireless contribution.
The U14s produced arguably their best performance of the season against Middlezoy. Dominating play from the start, they showed excellent teamwork and determination, only to be denied by an outstanding opposition keeper. Still level at the break, they pushed forward with energy in the second half, but Middlezoy struck twice to claim victory. The Wildcats’ commitment and spirit shone through, with every player giving their all.
Finally, the U15s faced Wincanton in a thrilling contest. After falling behind to an early rebound, the Wildcats hit back quickly through Mckayla H’s sharp finish. Wincanton then struck three more before the break to lead 4–1. A second-half resurgence saw the Wildcats dominate possession, with Lleya T scoring twice to pull them back into contention. Despite their efforts, Wincanton secured the points with a late goal in a 5-3 result. Keeper Sophie W and defender Frankie P shared player of the match honours for their crucial contributions.Although results didn’t always go their way, the Wildcats youth sides can take plenty of positives: resilience, teamwork and moments of quality that promise much for the rest of the season.
